Many of you know the origin of the name Burning River and it is not a glorious thing. About 20 years ago, Great Lakes Brewing Company took this less than fabulous moniker and named one of the beers in their fleet Burning River Pale Ale. This may not seem like a good marketing decision, but taking ownership of such an embarrassing event in our city’s history fits in-line with Great Lakes Brewing Company’s environmentally friendly mission. In 2001 Great Lakes took the name Burning River a little bit further establishing “Burning River Fest”. This Christmas in July type of festival has been gaining steam ever since bringing on more and more eco-friendly exhibitors, local food selections, and musicians.

Burning River Fest is more than a beer festival, it is a cause for environmental awareness. It is a celebration of showing how far we have come in understanding how important it is to be the caretakers of our environment. What better way to celebrate than with some delicious beer? And all of you Christmas Ale fans, yes, there will be Christmas Ale. After all, it is Christmas in July.

Play volleyball all summer at the Whiskey Island/Wendy Park courts, attend Krusty every year, but have never ventured over to the Coast Guard Station. Must change that soon!
This is a really cool event. I had a great time last year. I’ve never been to the old coast guard station before and it was cool to see Cleveland from that perspective. The atmosphere was fantastic and so were the people. I recommend it to anyone thinking of going.
